"The Trouble with Neo-cons"

An angry conservative is like a cornered mountain lion without teeth or claws. It might seem ferocious and deadly, but all it can do is jump on top of you and gum you to death.

Here’s the deal: A species, or in this case sub-species, can usually smell its own extinction and neo-cons are no exception. Having hijacked my country for the past 30 years, the jack-booted followers of Karl Rove have finally run afoul of common sense. And boy are they pissed!

Neo-cons, who actually have their roots in the Democratic Party believe it or not, have done everything they can to brainwash already brainwashed Americans into following a system built on fear and mass consumption. They nearly succeeded. Some would argue they did, most notably my favorite expatriate American Guy, who ran to Oz when an activist Supreme Court declared the theocratic regime of King Dubya victorious.

Thriving on disinformation and misdirection, the Rovian approach to campaigning and government was so blatantly based on the fascist model that only the stupidest and most blindly jingoistic couldn’t see it. Sadly, that description fits half of my fellow Americans to a T.

Proponents of the One World government theory, many of them conservative Libertarians, have turned against the Republican Party in great number thanks to Rove and Bush and Darth Cheney. One guy I know in particular who was once very much the Reagenite has since declared both parties are the same beneath the surface and our freedoms are being eradicated by a concerted neo-con effort to establish a benevolent dictatorship in the United States.

Wow. From Reagan worshipper to reality-spitter in a relatively short amount of time. I don’t believe there was anything great or admirable about Ronnie Dutch Raygun. He was an insincere, reactionary, union busting, unaware bubble boy whose candidacy and election were the first of many great practical jokes perpetrated upon the American public by Fate. A bad actor turned bad president. At least Chuck Heston was a decent actor.

Despite the apparent deification of Reagan, the Rovian neo-cons don’t seem to follow his example too often. Sure they espouse that ridiculous trickle down theory but the whole individual liberties thing eludes them. I always found it amusing that conservatives ridicule socialism because of their perception that it depends too much on the good intentions of human beings while doing the exact same thing with trickle down economics. Here it is in a nutshell: Nothing trickles down. Greed and corruption prevent it from happening. When someone sees how much they can make and KEEP, they don’t want to share it with those undeserving folks in the middle and at the bottom. Need historical precedent. Check out the Catholic Church controlled middle Ages.

Don’t get me wrong, any neo-con trolls out there. This post isn’t about extolling the virtues of the Democratic Party, whose own corruption and lack of vision have contributed greatly to the impending demise of this country. It also isn’t about holding liberalism above conservatism, as both tend to be woefully unrealistic in terms of how best to govern the general populace. What we’re dealing with here is the falsely named “philosophical battle” currently taking place in America.

Neo-cons would have you believe that they are on the side of decency and freedom and everyone else is on the side of radicalism and hatred. Apparently there’s nothing radical about creating an unfettered corporate atmosphere and nothing hateful about alienating the world community so you can get revenge against a neutered country that didn’t do a goddam thing to you.

Being a neo-con is about one thing and one thing only: Personal gain and lots of it. And they will do whatever it takes to ensure their lives of opulence and luxury. They will even turn on other not-as-rich people and force them to suffer. But the best part is their usage of the Hegelian approach that indoctrinates Americans into accepting what they do as part of the virtues of the free market economy.

Some neo-con just gave himself a hernia screaming about how the schools are all socialist brainwashing centers. I won’t deny the half-truth in that. Schools are nothing more than brainwashing centers, but to naively think they are strictly socialist is to ignore the fact that what they really do is train future consumers of useless crap. Sorry to break it to the extreme right think tanks, but socialism isn’t about being good little corporate citizens buying things we don’t need to support wealthy overlords.

The saddest development in American life to me is the apparent duping of the working class whites. Somehow they have been given a sense of belonging amongst wealthy conservatives who consider them a resource and their children no more than cannon fodder. They listen to talk radio that caters to the top 5% of the country as if it applies to them and they call their radio pundit gods to complain about all those liberals who don’t seem to understand than an honest day’s work will fix everything that’s broken.

If I were to profile these individuals, (a term I use loosely as they are quite literally sheep) I would classify them as mostly high school educated blue collar guys who see minorities as a threat to their piece of the pie. A pie they’re not allowed to eat, by the way.

Anyone who knows anything about slavery in the U.S. knows that the slave-owners tended to create situations that pitted slaves against each other for superficial reasons. A slave might be put in charge of the others in the field or lighter skinned or allowed to have sex with the master. Any of these things led them to consider themselves superior and, in many cases, made them willing to die for their master’s “honor.” These were the slaves that literally took up arms against their liberators when the North came a’marching in.

Blue-collar conservatives have a similar plantation mentality. They seem to believe that by defending these wealthy and successful people that they will somehow by osmosis become accepted in their world. Sorry, Jethro. They won’t even let you through the back door unless it’s an election year.

I used to despise these fools. I used to glare at them from my car and, trust me, getting glared at by me if you don’t know me isn’t the best feeling in the world. I have since come to realize they suffer from a genetic condition known in the Latin as stupidus redneckicus. They are genetically predisposed toward the type of stupidity that maintains an illusion of superiority and inclusion with people who have nothing but contempt for them. The slaves got over it because they didn’t possess the gene. They were just kept ignorant.

We simply cannot blame the neo-con propaganda machine exclusively. As powerful as their lobbies are and as far-reaching as their influence is, there is simply too much available information “out there” to fall for their societal brainwashing. That means anyone who does fall for it and it’s mentally impaired wants to believe it so badly that they will ignore all other voices and facts. That means that even though I no longer despise them I can’t pity them either.

However, my hatred could return after Election Day if that collective of NASCAR lovin’ good ol’ boys fall for the obvious pandering of Sara Palin’s laughable nomination and pull the lever for the nightmare ticket of the decade.
